• Popular South African telenovela ‘The River’ receives nomination for an Emmy

    Johannesburg– South African telenovela “The River” has received an International Emmy Award nomination in the Best Telenovela category. The show will now compete against other telenovelas from countries like Argentina, Colombia and Portugal.

    The television series created by Phathu Makwarela and Gwydion Beynon and produced by Tshedza Pictures, tells a story of “immense wealth and immense poverty” involving the Dlaminis and the Mokoenas and centered around the Khanyisa diamonds mine. The families are bound together by the discovery of a diamond that leads into an intense drama involving murder, betrayal and greed. The star-studded cast includes Linda Mtoba, Hlomla Dandala, Sindi Dlathu, Warren Masemola, and Presley Chweneyagae.

    The show’s producers announced the news by sharing a screenshot of the original mail they received in Instagram. The creators were super excited by the news and Makwarela shared his excitement on Twitter.

    Speaking to TshisaLIVE, the creators mentioned that “We are really thrilled by this nomination as it’s a continuous testament that South African stories are as relevant as any other global stories. Makwarela further mentioned that, “We are humbled by this acknowledgement from the International Emmy Awards Organization, and are very proud of our cast and crew, who continuously go out of their way to give their heart to the show. The River is a team effort, and we hope to keep telling amazing stories.”

    Following the news, many industry peers congratulated the entire team through social media for creating a unique and special show.

    “Give us a few days and we’ll be beyond thrilled. For now, I think it’s still a shock and we’re still processing it. We’re all grateful for the Emmys to see us and award this nomination,” Phathu Makwarela added.

    Earlier this year, the show dominated the 13th annual South African Film and Television awards by bagging 11 awards. These included the awards for the Best Actress -Telenovela, Best Actor -Telenovela, Best Supporting Actor- Telenovela and Best Telenovela awards.

    Since its release in 2018, the show has gained immense popularity among the South African viewers and trends on Twitter every night it airs. “The story is very current, relevant, and is told in a very fresh way. It mirrors what is happening in our own country where the rich people are getting richer, and the poor are getting poorer,” cast member Hlomla Dandala said while talking about the show.

    The 47th International Emmy Awards will be held in New York on 25th November at the Hilton Hotel.
